Favorite Butterfly Data Collection

Students will collect data on the favorite type of butterfly of students in the classroom.

Students will input data into Excel.

Students will create a graph in Excel of the data they have input.

 
Students will collect data, input the data in Excel and create a graph.
 
IMPLEMENTATION

Students have already been collecting data and graphing.  This is the first time they are using Excel.  They will be doing a few other lessons on data collection and inputting it into Excel.

 

Introduction: Show digital story,  Life Cycle of a Butterfly.   Discuss with students what colors of butterflies have they seen. Show display of and discuss the different types of butterflies found in America.

Hand out data collection sheets.  Have students walk around the classroom and find out which type of American butterfly students like the best.

Go to other 1st grade classroom and collect data on their favorite American butterfly.

Hand out disks. Tell students to line up, bringing their data collection sheets and disks.

Take students to the computer lab.

Show students the Icon for Excel and have them click on it.

Explain that the opening page is called a spreadsheet and that each rectangle is called a cell.

Give students instructions on how to create the data collection sheet and input data.

Instruct students how to create a graph from the data and input the graph on the spreadsheet.

Have students save the spreadsheet on their disks.

Have students print out the spreadsheet with the graph.

Go back to the classroom and discuss the results of their data collection.

Have students hand in their spreadsheets.

 
The computer lab is set up for students with physical disabilities.  The classroom aid will be available for all students with learning disabilities.

Make sure and make appointment with other 1st grade class to collect data.
