Performance Objective 2Use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and independent learning activities. (1, 3)

The purpose of this lesson is to help the students to understand their five senses. They will be very knowledgeable of the use and importance of the five senses. Student objectives: when asked, the students will be able to:

1.Name four of the five senses and explain their origins on the body (i.e., eyes, ears, nose, tongue, hands)

2.Use four of the five senses to explore and describe various objects

3.understand and experience how important the senses are to them.

IMPLEMENTATION

After this lesson the students will understand their five senses and what each one is all about. We will also in this lesson, help the students understand what life would be like without some of these senses.

In this lesson, we are going to, as a group, talk about our five senses.

1) We will get together as a group, and I will ask the children what they think their five senses might be.
After the children give some feedback, I will tell them the five senses.(5 mins)

2) The first sense we will learn about is hearing. We will have a cd player playing a c.d. with different types of noises. The students will then raise there hand and tell me what the noise is that they are hearing.(10 mins)

3) The second sense is smell. I will have a table set up with a variety of different materials in a bowl. The students will individually smell the different containers, while being blindfolded, and use their nose to identify what they smell. They will write what they smelled on a sheet of paper. After all are done, we will see how many they got correct. (10 mins)

4)The third sense is taste. In this lesson each student will get a small individual bag of skittles. The students will taste each different color and we will discuss what flavor they are tasting. (10 mins)

5)The fourth sense will be touch. I will have small pieces of different materials such as sandpaper, cotton balls, paper, leather, and fur. Each student will receive a piece of material( some students will have the same materials). They will then explain what the texture of the material feels like to them. (10 mins)

6) The last sense is sight. We will be playing a game to help the students understand what sight is all about. We will be playing "I spy". Each student will have a turn and they will select a object in the class room. They will then say for example "I spy with my two eyes something yellow". The other students will then, by raising their hand, try to guess what object the student has selected. (15 mins)

7) After we have discussed all the five senses we will get in five groups and each group will be assigned a sense. The students will then as a group discuss what it would be like if that sense was taking away. Then the students will tell the class some of the ways that it would affect their life by not having that sense.(15 mins)

8) Each student will then be assigned homework. In this assignment the students will get on a computer and use the paint program to draw a self portrait of them using their favorite sense. (10 mins)

This lesson is very important and I hope that they have gained a full understanding of what the senses are used for and how important they are to have and use.

  • Materials and resources:
    c.d. player
    c.d.
    individual bags of skittles (15)
    sandpaper cut in small pieces
    cotton balls (3)
    paper cut in small pieces
    leather cut in small pieces
    fur cut in small pieces
  • Technology resources:
Paint, c.d. player will be used to listen to a c.d.
  • The number of computers required is 5.
  • Students Familiarity with Software Tool:
Some maybe familar with the paint program but others will need to be shown how to use the program

Don't let Tommy and Sam be in the same groups.
Make sure that Sarah sits in the front of the classroom. She needs to be reminded to stay on task.

We will need to ask all students to see if they are allergic to skittles.

Each student will be using the paint program on the computer to draw a self-portrait of them using their favorite sense.
When we are learning about hearing, we will be using the c.d. player to play a c.d.

ASSESSMENT

The students will be receiving a grade from the group presentation. They will be graded on the creativity, participation, staying on topic, and speaking clearly while presenting.

The students should use their creativity and thinking skills together as a group to make a presentation to the class. I expect each individual to participate in the group project.

The presentation will be worth 50 points.
- 25 points will be based on the participation while the group is preparing the presentation.
- 25 points will be based on the presentation
-spoke clearly
-stayed on one subject
-creativity

The lesson is very informative. The class participation was strong. The class worked well as a group and presentated the topics very thoroughly.
