Identifying Story Elements

3

Students will identify story elements.

Students will read a short story with their assigned partner (both will be at the same reading level). Together they will identify the story elements (setting, characters, problem, main events, and solution). They will create a Power Point Presentation to present their story and it's elements to the class.

IMPLEMENTATION

Students in third grade must be able to read a story/passage and identify the story elements. This will help them to better comprehend what they read and will also help them with writing a story. Using Power Point will expand their technology skills by challenging them to create a presentation. Since oral language is one of our focuses in third grade, having the students present their Power Point will give them an opportunity to share their story orally with the class.

Before this lesson the student must be familiar with making a slide in Power Point. This lesson is a great way for them to begin manipulating and using Power Point to create a presentation. After this lesson, student can use Power Point in multiple contexts throughout the school year.

1. Students will be grouped with a partner who is reading at about the same level as he/she is.
2. Students will be given 45 minutes of one afternoon to read their assigned story with their parter.
3. Partners will discuss the story elements and fill out a story map.
4. The next day, students will spend 15 minutes retelling the story with their partner and asking/answering questions about it together. They will double check their story map to make sure it is accurate.
5. The class will go to the computer lab and partners will share one computer.
6. The teacher will quickly review how to make a slide in Power Point (which the students should already be familiar with).
7. Students will work with partners to create a Power Point Presentation of their story and it's elements. The presentation must have a different slide for each story element. This may take two sessions in the computer lab to complete.
8. After the Power Point Presentations are completed, students will present their presentations using the SmartBoard.

Special education students will be join a partnership that is reading just a little higher that he/she is. Together the group of three will collaborate and create the presentation.

Monolinguals will be given a story in their native language and will be able to create their presentation using their native language.

Students who are ELLs or who are at risk of failing will be able to be successful in this project because the reading will be at their level. Having students work together will also encourage everyone to be successful.

Advanced learners/early finishers will be able to add images to their presentation.
