Effects of light on an object

10-11

To teach students about the effects of light on objects in art experiences.

The students will create plaster sculptures as described in the "Manipulating Man" lesson and explore the effects of light on a 3D object

IMPLEMENTATION

This lesson continues the development of the students understanding of light and shadow as well as the understanding of how light effects the shading of an object

Using the plaster sculptures created in "Manipulating Man" (see attached), the students will hold their projects under a light and render the shadows seen on the base as they relate to the sculpture. Direction will be given to choose the "best" shadow that accents the sculpture and uses the space most effectively. The students will then choose a color and create 3 values to show the intensity of the shadow created by the sculpture used. The darkest value is used in the deepest shadow edged by the next lightest and the lightest value is used to complete the background base. The figure may be left white to allow for the appreciation of the plaster construction and contrasting the shadow usage.

Students will work collaboratively & individually. Students will work in groups of 3.

4 class periods. 40 Min. per class.

I have done this lesson several ways as shown in our schools artworksplus web site. We have painted the figures, made detailed backgrounds, added accessories, made them single and double shadows and the current process seems to work the best.
