To build on drawing fundementals. Understanding of theme, spacial relationships and flow within a composition

The students will select related objects and arrange them, through a series of teacher assisted reviews, into a aesthetic arrangement based on a main object and elements to lead the viewer throughout the composition.

IMPLEMENTATION

The lesson picks up on the skills shown in 7th grade art in the areas of aerial and linear perspective. Specific skills should be evident in their work at this level. These skills carry over into the contour line drawing unit also covered during this grade level.

The students will be shown the concepts of composition in classroom discussion with students interacting with the teacher as the concepts are shown on the board. After the discussion the students will be directed to find examples of a main object, a foreground element, a middleground element, and a background element from magazines of other sources. The students will then draw a picture using all of the elements to the best of their abilities. These drawings are then compared to the Pa. Assessment Drawing skills chart to see "where their skill level appears". The students drawings are then critiqued by the instructor and suggestions are given to arrange the objects spacially and compositionally to make the drawings more aesthetically pleasing. This process is repeated until the works are developed to a point that they may be tranferred as final drafts to be applied to associated media to finish.

In this series of examples, the sketch created by the student is reviewed through several steps as explained earlier into a developed composition.
Attachments
  1. Step One The student selects their objects and arranges them into a scene
  2. Step Two The teacher and student discuss the possibilities of the composition and suggestions are added to the sketck (blue lines)
  3. Step Three The student then "re-draws" his composition using composition rules, teacher suggestions and their own insights.
  4. Step Four The student then presents developed composition for review and creates final draft to be applied to media for completion.

Students will work individually.

3 class periods. 40 Min. per class.

Demonstrating the concept first to the entire class at a blackboard is the easiest way to explain the process. Using magazines, web-sites, or fine art to support the concept of composition is suggested.
