VITAL INFORMATION

Art, Mathematics

Composition in art

9-12

To teach the students spacial relationships within a proper composition.
To illustrate the positioning of objects within a composition.
To develop skill using art media

The students will design an 8" grid separated by 12 lines creating 13 open spaces. Each space is divided by one third until the number of spaces is achieved. The grid will then be filled with drawings based on a single theme and positioned in such a way to enhance the main object which falls on a third.

IMPLEMENTATION

The activity teaches composition skills as well as proportions relating to math. Problem solving skills are also addressed. The ability to alter drawings to fit into assorted shapes is a challenge for young artists. The selection of media has to be decided as well as the introduction of illustrating skills with razor tip markers to finish makes this project a real challenge.

The students will sketch out possible solutions to the 12 line/13 spaces problem trying to save the largest shape to fall on a third. Teacher direction is crucial to make sure that accuracy in 1/3 divisions is consistant. Once the sketch is completed it is then re-created on finish paper using lines 1/4 inch wide. Once the grid is complete, the students will draw in their drawings based on a theme in the 13 spaces created. The students will place the largest or most important object in the largest box on a third and fill the other 12 with secondary objects to enhance the main object and create flow within the piece. The drawings then will be colored and outlined, and possibly the artist may be creative with the grid to complete the work.

Students will work individually.

8 class periods. 40 Min. per class.

This project is a creative change from the normal drawing experience. The students view it as a challenge and we have good results.
