VITAL INFORMATION

Art, Mathematics, Vocational Studies

Application of the many forms of perspective into a construction design

7-8

To encourage creative thinking
To demonstrate skill and understanding of perspective concepts
To encourage the use of depth in our students development of drawing

The students will create a 3D drawing that they designed using perspective skills covered in class. The drawing will be shaded using values of grey shown earlier in the color unit.

IMPLEMENTATION

Understanding skills needed and developing skills in the area of drawing is essential to the young artists experience in art. The review of earlier lessons in perspective and the addition of advanced concepts used in a project where the skills are actually used to create something original shows the students not only how, but also why.

The students will sketch a flat construction containing angled planes, stairs, stacked boxes and openings in flat planes. Using the perspective concept of 2 point and oblique perspective, the students will then render an accurate 3D version of their sketch. The students will present their work shaded in values of grey in relation to a single light source.

These are some examples of finished "Crazy Constructions" done by my 7th grade art classes.

Students will work collaboratively & individually. Students will work in groups of 1.

9 class periods. 40 Min. per class.

This activity teaches students that they can create drawings that look 3D. It gives them confidence to take these skills and apply them to all applications of drawing in other areas of art. The skills covered are a great introduction to drafting and architecture skills that may be of interest later.
