VITAL INFORMATION

Art

Watercolor Painting ( technique development Still-Life)

10-12

Using a soda can for the subject, students will create a rendering of the object applying watercolor procedures and techniques

The students will provide a sodacan, distort it, render a contour line image of the subject and then create a painting of the distorted soda can using watercolor procedures shown in class

IMPLEMENTATION

Watercolor painting is the first step in the transition into fine art in our course of study. Prior to this experience, students have been taught lessons dealing with drawing, composition, color theory, and value usage in preparation to this step which assures their ultimate success.

The students will first be assigned to bring their favorite flavor of soda can. In class, the students will be shown that the cans become more interesting if altered by bending. After a demonstration, the students will be allowed to decide where and how much to "damage" their can. Students will be allowed to check our art web-site to see examples of the project completed

Students will work individually.

6 class periods. 40 Min. per class.

Making a fun activity out of "denting" the cans is a good way to get the students interested in the challenge of painting a distorted object. The drawings/sketches leading up to the painting stage should be shared within the class for appreciation and understanding of the skills needed. Showing wash techniques to create the illusion of a shiny surface periodically helps to insure classroom success
